While EAC is a Windows program, it has been known to work well under WINE if you are a Mac or Linux user. This includes correcting for the sampling offset of each individual CD drive, offering multiple modes that can be used to rip CDs trading speed for accuracy if needed, and verifying the accuracy of rips via two separate databases. Like the name suggests, the program works to copy a CD's audio exactly how it is on the disc. The program I use to rip CDs is called Exact Audio Copy. While this type of damage is serious, it is luckily quite rare and isolated to CDs handled or stored extremely poorly, or (in the case of disc rot) isolated to a small number of manufacturing plants during a small number of years. This can be checked by holding the CD up to a light source and checking it carefully, noting any pinholes, and by carefully checking the label side for any damage. Damage to the label side of the CD could cause damage to the data layer itself, permanently removing the affected section of the data layer! "Disc rot", such as light pinholes present on the CD, also indicates that portions of the data layer have been permanently damaged. The CD's data layer, where the audio is stored, is extremely close to the CD's label side, not the playing side. These make it harder for the drive's laser to track the audio on the CD, inhibiting the ability for it to read the disc accurately. While most drives will be able to get past small issues on the CD's playing side, small imperfections such as these can inhibit ripping. Ripping your CDs to a lossless format, accurately tagging the files, and verifying that your rips are accurate will ensure that your music stands the test of time.
